Setting course for the future, the Zürn Harvesting factory in Merchingen, southern Germany, has upgraded its manufacturing facilities and capacities with a new powder coating plant for large machine parts which is now one of the largest painting plants in the region.
At the heart of the investment is a brand new powder coating plant which meets the latest environmental standards. “This new plant puts us in the position to coat very large and up to 14m long parts, which is unique in our region. At the same time, it helps us assure the high quality standards we apply to our products,” confirms Managing Director Rolf Zürn.
The new painting facility gives all machine components a blasting and automated wet-chemical treatment before these are taken to the painting chamber where the powder coat is applied manually. As a last step, the parts are heated in the furnace at product specific and defined temperature curves.
“The new facility also scores in terms of energy efficiency as the warm exhaust air is recuperated by a heat exchanger and is used for heating in winter,” explains Martin Filz who manages the coating centre and who accompanied the project from start to finish.
The new semi-automatic powder coating centre at Zürn Harvesting reduces lead times and increases the throughput of especially large parts. After all, the Merchingen factory produces headers of up to 12m cutting widths.
“The blueprints were drawn up with flexibility being the focus,” explains Martin Filz. As a result, the new centre can process parts that measure up to 2.80m in height, 3.30m in width and 14m in length and weigh up to 4,000kg.
It was agreed that powder coating was the only option for painting farm machines, because it is the only method that guarantees an effective protection from corrosion and an equally high quality of the coat. At the same time, doing without solvents it is an environmentally friendly solution.
The expansion of our production capacities also involved the expansion of our assembly capacities as well as prototype manufacturing and trialling. With these measures we effectively removed the bottlenecks in our manufacturing processes. For an optimised utilisation of the new painting facility we also accept contract powder coating assignments.
The new powder coating plant for large machine parts is one of the largest facilities of this kind in the region. Martin Filz says, every day the facility puts through 400m² of metal sheet for powder coating.
At the Merchingen factory, the family business Zürn Harvesting manufactures headers for combines and forage harvesters as well as for mechanical weeders and at the Hohebuch factory we produce special field trial equipment. Headquartered in Schöntal-Westernhausen, we market our products across the globe.
